Market your small business with keywords and relevant terms (Video)

Hi, Justin Gagnon here with the small business marketing tip of the day. Searchmetrics just released a huge study of the top search ranking factors, and one of the most important findings is relevant terms on a site. These words aren’t the specific terms someone searched for, but rather the abundance of similar language throughout the site.

So how can you make sure you have these relevant terms?

Just make sure you write for your readers, not for Google

Web crawlers might be the ones making the ranking decisions, but they’re programed to understand what humans want. After all, Matt Cutts has been telling us for years to build sites for users, not for search engines.

Also, don’t forget to use metrics that focus on readers

The keyword data Google provides these days isn’t nearly what it used to be, but that’s for good reason. They want to reward sites with the most valuable information, not the best meta keyword strategy.

If you want to use data to improve your content marketing strategy, look at engagement metrics like bounce rates on your landing pages. And guess what? Google’s looking at that too. So don’t waste your time and sanity checking specific keyword rankings. Put your energy into making your site a resource on topics related to your brand and the crawlers will take it from there.

Thanks for watching. Have a great weekend!
